21. Plantain. Plantago lanceolata

Plantain. Plantain has long been used in country lotions for a range of external complaints. It is useful to apply the crushed leaves to wounds, sores, cuts, scratches, bites and even hemorrhoids. Recent research shows Plantain can relieve constriction of the airways and is a useful anti-inflammatory with anti-bacterial properties.
There are five species of Plantain: ‘Lamb’s tongue’, ‘Greater’, ‘Ribwort’, ‘Seaside’ and ‘Buck’s horn’. It has been used as a salad vegetable but doesn’t taste too good. It has an ancient name of ‘Way Bread’ but is quite a desperate snack. Children often use it to flick the heads at each other or wind them in hair. Another name for Plantain is ‘White man’s foot’ as it appeared in other countries along with the white races. In magic and alchemy it is said to repel bad dreams and spirits.
