Penny Cress. Traditionally regarded as an antidote to poisons, it was once known by the name of Mithridate Mustard. It is common in the south UK and often found in cornfields and roadside verges. The young leaves taste like a cross between mustard and onion but become too bitter for eating once the plant flowers.They can be used in soups or a small amount can be included in salads. The seeds can be ground up and used as a mustard substitute. Both the seeds and the young shoots are said to be good for the eyes and the seeds are used in Tibetan medicine, having an acrid taste and a cooling potency. They are anti-inflammatory and febrifuge. Although the plant has a general anti-bacterial effect, large doses can negatively effect white-blood cell production.
