| Wild Strawberry. Just like a miniature garden strawberry, it likes slightly limey soils in open woods or grassy places. The leaves and roots have astringent, diuretic and tonic properties and leaf tea is often used for convalescents and ‘to make the heart merrie’. In proper ‘Doctrine of Signatures’ fashion they have also been used to ‘take away the redness of face spots’. Wild varieties have more medicinal value than cultivated. Gerard says that a poultice of the leaves will take away the burning heat of a wound. A decoction of the leaves is said to help keep the teeth and gums strong. The name strawberry comes not from the straw that goes under garden strawberries but from ‘strayberry’, given its nature to send out long runners and move where it wants to. The French make a delicious liqueur from wild strawberries, called ‘Framboise’. |
