47. Yarrow. Achillea millefolium

The word ‘millefolium’ means from ‘a thousand leaves’ which is a fair description of this feathery plant. Yarrow has many active components and medicinal uses. It is an antispasmodic and carminative, has anti-inflammatory qualities that can help with a range of digestive disorders. Another ‘Carpenter’s Weed’, Yarrow was once the original ‘soldier’s woundwort’ as its leaves would also help to bind the edges of a wound and keep it astringent. Its name comes from a story of Achilles, who was told of Yarrow’s healing power by the Centaur, Chiron and saved the lives of his warriors by healing their wounds with Milfoil (as it is also called). In Sweden it is sometimes used as a substitute for hops in beer. Its fern-loke leaves were used often in bridal wreaths and garlands and country people regarded it as a ‘venus tree’ - or ruled by the planet venus. In magic and alchemy Yarrow held in the hand is said to remove fear and fantasy. Extended use or large amounts of yarrow make some people highly sensitive to light and colour.
