Vervain. Gerard reports the use of Vervain against fevers and its popularity in ‘old wive’s tales’. He says some doctors used it for treating the Plague but that they were misinformed because “The Divell did reveal it as a secret and divine medicine’. There are many examples of Vervain being used as a medicinal and magical plant. The name ‘Verbena’ was one that designated ‘altar’ plants and magical uses included protection and ‘holy food’ to produce magical spells or as a relaxant in psychic work. European Vervain was said to be an aphrodisiac, sure to secure the favour of ladies.
The plant contains bitter glycosides that are said to help the nervous system with tension and stress. It has been used for the treatment of eczema and other skin conditions, whooping cough, dropsy, jaundice and some liver and kidney problems. It has also been used for mild depression following heavy colds or flu. New studies are re-affirming the many values of this modest plant.
